Scientific description of project area

The project area is located in the northern part of the N-Bakony. It is a very valuable part which is quite different from the core area of the Bakony mountain. It has a limestone bedrock and an indented surface which is cut by narrow and steep valleys. The area has a diverse micro-climate, therefore it has a mosaic vegetation pattern. There are 9150 Medio-European limestone beech forests of the Cephalanthero-Fagion (5%) in the valley’s bottom. There are 9180 * Tilio-Acerion forests of slopes, screes and ravines (5%) on the steep slopes. There are 91H0* Pannonian woods with Quercus pubescens (20%) along the hilltop. The majority of the area is covered by 91G0 * Pannonic woods with Quercus petraea and Carpinus betulus forest (50%). There is about 18% of 91M0 Pannonian-Balkanic turkey oak –sessile oak forests in the area.

Pannonian-Balkanic turkey oak –sessile oak forests in the area. In the most steep parts and in shallow soils the structure of the forest is diverse, however in those parts which are suitable for forestry there are 2-6 ha size homogeneous blocks today where the wood stock was reduced while the invasive Robinia pseudoacacia spread in the area. The most characteristic plant is: Daphne laureola.

The most characteristic animals are:

  • Mammals: Barbastella barbastellus, Myotis bechsteini, Myotis blythii, Myotis emarginatus, Myotis myotis, Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, Rhinolophus hipposideros,
  • Birds: Columba oenas, Ficedula parva, Ficedula albicollis, Dendrocopos medius, Dendrocopos minor, Dendrocopos syriacus, Dryocopus martius; Lanius collurio, Lullula arborea, Sylvia nisoria.
  • Insects: Cerambyx cerdo, Eriogaster catax, Lucanus cervus, Morimus funereus, Rosalia alpina.

The project area is a very important mosaic land with the domination of 91G0 * Pannonic woods with Quercus petraea and Carpinus betulus and 91H0* Pannonian woods with Quercus pubescens habitat which is an EU priority habitat according to Annex I. of the Habitat Directives. The forests need rehabilitation especially in those parts which became homogeneous due to former forestry activities. It is also important to eliminate the invasive species Robinia pseudoacacia and Aillanthus altissima. The restoration of the area will be an example in the region for other forest managers.
